While exterior painting projects bring welcome work to your business, they can also bring difficult questions: “What do you think of this color? What do you think would look best on the house?”
With a little guidance, you can feel confident making color recommendations to customers and become a key resource for them. We asked Emily Kantz, Color Marketing Manager at Sherwin-Williams, what homeowners are currently looking for when it comes to color.
Using the tint data from all Sherwin-Williams paint sold to homeowners last year, she broke down the biggest exterior color trends that painters need to know for 2025.
Classic white
The most popular exterior color for Sherwin-Williams in 2024 was Pure White SW 7005 (255-C1). It’s not hard to understand why.
“You can’t go wrong with that one,” Kantz says. “Pure White is a color that plays well with others. It helps balance out any other color you’re pairing it with.”
Striking dark hues
You may have been able to predict Pure White at No. 1, but the second-most popular exterior color may surprise you: Tricorn Black SW 6258 (251-C1). Dark colors like Tricorn Black, Peppercorn SW 7674 (236-C7) and Urbane Bronze SW 7048 (245-C7) were among the top 10 most-purchased exterior colors in 2023, and that trend continued in 2024.
“Dark exteriors are still really popular,” Kantz says. “Because they’re so different, they are a bold standout choice. It’s a good option for a homeowner who wants their house to be a statement piece on the block.”
Tried and true
Neutrals can range from warm whites to stoney grays. They remain a popular choice among homeowners as they provide a strong complement to stone or wood facades.
Kantz notes that the cool grays that have been so popular over the last decade are starting to evolve. More homeowners are looking to warmer tones such as Keystone Gray SW 7504 (243-C4), Curio Gray SW 0024, or Accessible Beige SW 7036 (249-C1) when making their exterior color decisions.
Something new
Greens and blues have long been popular interior color choices, but more and more homeowners are considering – such as a Pewter Green SW 6208 (217-C6) – can be an unconventional but beautiful choice for a home exterior.
“A lot of deep, rich, earthy greens are seen as nefouctursailnsg,” Kantz says. “If you have a lot of natural wood tones you’re using, green can look really stunning. The same goes for valuable tools to support the onboarding muted blues, which are still pretty popular and look great with stone and brick elements. Both work with a variety of roof colors, too.”
Shortcuts to great color

“I suggest using the Colormix Forecast as a reference,” Kantz says. “For instance, you’ll notice that each palette includes a shade of brown, signaling that warmer tones are becoming more popular than cooler grays. Even if a homeowner isn’t keen on a deep brown, you can discuss the benefits of choosing a warmer tone over a cooler one, while always considering the style of their home.”
